The key to being a good Sales Assistant is to enjoy dealing with people. Customers are at the heart of our business, so you must be ready to help them. That means talking, listening and being helpful, no matter how busy you are. Of course, you need to understand exactly what each customer wants, and that means product knowledge is very important too.
When you’re not looking after customers, either on the tills or on the shop floor, there are shelves to fill and displays and promotions to set up and keep looking good. Every team member has a role to play and you need to co-operate and work together to achieve store goals. These could be anything from sales targets to mystery shopper scores. During our seasonal peaks – such as Christmas and ‘Back to School’ in September – you’ll be particularly busy, so flexibility towards working hours would be a big help. However busy you are, you need to stay upbeat and give great, speedy customer service!
With products, tasks and customers constantly changing, you’ll enjoy a role with lots of variety. What’s more, as the business evolves and innovates, you’ll have an opportunity to learn new things including technology.
For Sales Assistants who are keen to learn and progress, our Retail Academy programmes equip you with the tools and skills you need to take the step up to Supervisor and beyond. Find out more here.
