Job Overview

WHSmith Group is entering an exciting new era as a pure-play global travel retailer, following the sale of our High Street business earlier this year. As we continue to expand our international footprint and focus on high-growth markets, we’re looking for a talented and strategic Communications Manager to join our team in London. As Communications Manager, you’ll support both external communications (Press Office) and internal communications, playing a key role in how we present ourselves to the outside world and how we keep our global team informed and engaged.

This is a unique opportunity to make a real impact in a fast-moving, high-profile environment — perfect for a media-savvy communicator with a flair for storytelling and a passion for brand reputation.

What You’ll Be Doing:

External Communications / Press Office (70%)

  • Acting as a key member of our Press Office — managing media relations and responding to press enquiries.

  • Writing, editing and distributing press releases, statements, and briefing materials.

  • Monitoring media coverage and compiling reports; proactively flagging emerging issues.

  • Supporting crisis and issues management, preparing reactive statements and media responses.

  • Collaborating with stakeholders to pitch stories that enhance WHSmith’s reputation and profile.

  • Liaising with external PR agencies when needed.

Internal Communications (30%)

  • Writing and publishing engaging internal newsletters and company updates.

  • Supporting company events including town halls and leadership briefings.

  • Working with teams across the business to align messaging and driving employee engagement.

  • Managing internal communication channels, including employee app.

  • Maintaining a consistent tone of voice across all internal content.

What we are looking for:

  • 4+ years' experience in a communications role (e.g. press office, PR agency, or media-facing environment).

  • Exceptional writing and editing skills, with sharp attention to detail.

  • Strong media relations experience and ability to craft compelling press content.

  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.

  • Highly organised with excellent project management skills.

  • Confident working cross-functionally and influencing stakeholders at all levels.

  • A team player with a proactive mindset and collaborative approach.

How we reward our teams:

  • Hybrid Working Model from home and in the office
  • 4pm Friday Finish
  • Flexible Working
  • 24 Days holiday, plus your Birthday off, plus Bank Holidays with an opportunity to buy extra days holiday
  • Family Friendly Leave
  • Company Pension scheme
  • Sharesave Scheme
  • Annual Bonus based on company and personal performance
  • Competitive Salary and Car Allowance
  • Private Medical
  • Staff Discount Card for stores and online
