There are two things that stand out for me about my career, first is the ability to be my own entrepreneur within a big company given the autonomy to make decisions and feeling empowered. The second is the focus on people and career development.
Sometimes, as Black individuals, we limit ourselves to certain careers, assuming that's where we'll find the most success. For example, commercial and merchandising roles might not be seen as typical choices for Black people. Yet, changing the narrative involves recognizing that there's room for us in every sphere. You don't need to be white to excel in specific areas.
Last year, a few Black candidates attended our assessment centres for our graduate program. There was one candidate that really stood out and we decided to immediately hire him and offer him a permanent role. He's performing exceptionally well in the commercial space, affirming that there's a place for us everywhere – we as a business just need to expand our search.
